Ingredients

  • 2 giant garlic knots
  • 1 pound 80/20 ground beef
  • 1 large white or yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • 4 slices American Cheese
  • 4 teaspoons yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • burger sauce
  • 2-3 teaspoon avocado or vegetable oil, for drizzling to cook patties

Instructions

  • In a large pan or skillet under medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add in the onions and cook while stirring until the onions start to softened. Season with salt and Worcestershire sauce. Continue to cook while stirring until the onions are fully softened and take on a golden brown, caramelized color, about 6-8 minutes or longer as needed. Remove from heat.
  • Evenly slice the garlic knots in half. In the same skillet used to make the caramelized onions, melt the remaining butter under medium heat. Add the knots cuts side down to toast until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Divide the ground beef into (4) 1/4 pound portions and shape into a ball. Flatten each portion of beef into a thin patty between two pieces of parchment paper. Alternatively, you can use a burger press or the back of a spatula to flatten each portion of beef into thin patties directly in the pan.
  • In the skillet under medium high heat, drizzle in some oil.
  • In batches, add the smashed patties into the skillet. Season with salt and black pepper and spread 1 teaspoon of mustard over patties (optional). Cook patties for 2-3 minutes, flip, season with salt and black pepper and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes or until preferred doneness.
  • Add a slice of American cheese over each patty. Cover the skillet with a lid to allow the cheese to melt. Stack (2) patties on top of each other to form a double patty.
  • On a clean surface, place down the bottom half of a garlic knot, spread over some burger sauce (about 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons or more if desired) and top with a double cheese patty.
  • Spoon some caramelized onions over the patties, spread some burger sauce over the top half of the garlic knot (about 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons or more if desired) and place over the onions. Repeat with remaining knot, patties and caramelized onions for a total of (2) burgers.
  • Serve burgers immediately with fries and extra burger sauce or on its own. Enjoy!
