Ingredients

Caramelized Onions and Ground Beef Filling

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 large white or yellow onion, diced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, adjust to taste
  • salt to taste
  • 4 ounces shredded cheddar cheese blend (white and yellow)

Slider Assembly and Topping

  • 9 Hawaiian sweet rolls, see notes
  • burger sauce, see notes
  • 8 colby jack cheese slices (may substitute with American or cheddar cheese slices)
  • 4 ounces shredded cheddar cheese blend (white and yellow)
  • 2 ounces shredded mozzarella cheese, optional
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • garlic clove, minced, optional
  • salt to taste

Instructions

Caramelized Onions and Beef Filling

  • Preheat oven to 350F. Line a 9x9 square baking pan or large baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and add in the onions. Season with salt to taste. Sauté until onions become soft and golden brown, 6-8 minutes or longer as needed. Spoon caramelized onions into a small bowl. Set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add the ground beef. Use a large spoon to break up the beef. Mix in the garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt to taste. Cook the beef until it is no longer pink. Mix in the cheese just until melted and remove from heat.

Sliders Assembly and Topping

  • Evenly slice the attached rolls in half horizontally. Place the bottom half into the baking pan or on the baking sheet.
  • Spread an even layer of the burger sauce on top, about 3-4 tablespoons. Evenly layer (4) slices of colby jack cheese over the rolls. Spoon over the ground beef filling and top with the caramelized onions. Sprinkle remaining cheddar cheese and mozzarella (optional) over the onions. Evenly layer the remaining (4) colby jack cheese slices on top.
  • Spread a layer of burger sauce over the top half of the rolls, about 3-4 tablespoons. Carefully, place on top of the colby jack cheese slices.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the butter, parsley and salt to taste. Generously brush the top of the rolls with about half of the butter mixture.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes (if using a baking sheet) or 15-20 minutes (if using a baking pan). If the cheese is not fully melted, add the sliders back into the oven for an additional 5-10 or until the cheese is melted to desired consistency.
  • Mix in minced garlic (optional) into remaining butter mixture and brush over hot slider buns. Serve immediately while still hot. Enjoy!

Notes

  • I used this Hawaiian Sweet Rolls recipe which yields (9) rolls. If using store bought rolls, you will only need (9) attached rolls for this recipe.
  • I used this Homemade Burger Sauce Recipe but any store bought option will work!
  • The addition of mozzarella cheese is optional but adds a nice creamy cheese flavor to the sliders.
  • In place of the colby cheese slices, cheddar or American cheese slices maybe used.
