In-N-Out Flying Dutchman Burger Recipe

How to Make In-N-Out Flying Dutchman Burger

This In-N-Out Flying Dutchman Burger Recipe is seriously a 10 out of 10! Consisting of cheesy beef patties sandwiched between perfectly cooked caramelized onions, each bite of these burgers is pure bliss. Some other perks to this recipe is that it is easy to make, requires minimal ingredients and is a scrumptious gluten free alternative to traditional burgers that are served with a bread bun. To make this recipe, you will need the key ingredients shared below.

Key Ingredients

  • Large White or Yellow Onions
  • Ground Beef
  • American Cheese Slices
  • Yellow Mustard
  • Seasonings (Salt, Black Pepper)
  • Preferred Oil of Choice

(See recipe card below for the exact measurements for listed ingredients.)

Preparation

  • Prep Burger Patties – divide the ground beef into (4) equal portions. Individually smash the divided beef portions between two pieces of parchment paper using a burger press or heavy bottom plate or pot for a total of (4) smashed patties. Set aside.
  • Cook the Onions – heat up some oil, about 1 tablespoon, in a large nonstick frying pan or griddle over medium heat. Add the slices of onions and season with salt and black pepper. Cook the onions, pressing down with a spatula intermittently, until it becomes softened and caramelized, about 7 to 9 minutes. Carefully, flip the onion slices, season with salt and black pepper, and cook while pressing down with a spatula intermittently to caramelized, about 6 to 8 minutes or longer as needed. Carefully transfer the onion slices to a large plate and set aside.
  • Cook the Patties – heat up some oil, about 1 1/2 to 2 teaspoons, in the same pan used to cook the onions under medium high heat. In batches of 1 to 2 patties, add the smashed patties into the pan. Generously season with salt and black pepper, spread some mustard over the top of the patties and cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Flip the patties, season with salt and black pepper and cook for an additional 1 to 2 minutes or until desired doneness. Add a slice of cheese over the cooked patties to melt, about 1 minute. Place one cheese patty over the other and transfer to a plate. Repeat process with remaining smashed patties and cheese.
  • Assemble Burgers – place down a caramelized onion slice, top with one of the stacked double cheese patties, and place a caramelized onion slice on top to form a burger. Repeat with remaining ingredients for a total of (2) Flying Dutchman burgers.
  • Serve – Flying Dutchman burgers immediately with a side of burger sauce (I used this Homemade Burger Sauce Recipe) for dipping and hot chili peppers (optional). For a full meal, serve burgers with a side of In-N-Out Animal Style Fries (I used this In-N-Out Animal Style Fries Recipe).
