Key Ingredients
- Mayonnaise – Mayo helps creates a smooth creamy foundation for the sauce with its signature rich and smooth texture
- Dill Pickles – This is going to add both texture and really nice sweet vinegary notes.
- Shallot – Adds more texture and flavor to this sauce with its subtle sweetness and delicate flavor.
- Capers – For its briny, tangy, and salty flavor, which complements the creamy base of the sauce and adds depth to the overall taste.
- Lemon Juice – Brightens up the sauce with a nice citrusy tanginess and balances the richness of the mayonnaise and the briny flavors of other ingredients like capers and pickles.
- Dill Pickle Juice – Adds more delicious tangy flavor while complementing the creamy base with adds a fresh vibrant notes.

- In a mixing bowl, add all of the ingredients and mix until well combined. Homemade tartar sauce transferred into an airtight container will last for 1-2 weeks stored in the fridge.

Homemade Tartar Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 4 tablespoons shallots or white onions, finely chopped
- 4 tablespoons dill pickles, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons capers, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons fresh dill, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon dill pickle juice
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a small mixing bowl, add all of the ingredients and mix until well combined. Use immediately. For longer storage, transfer tartar sauce into an airtight container like a mason jar and store in fridge for 1-2 weeks.
Notes
- For a sweeter tartar sauce, replace half or all of the dill pickles with sweet relish.
