How to Make Garlic Knot Smash Burger

This garlic knot smashburger recipe is my latest obsession! It is literally the best of both worlds with the pairing of a soft buttery garlic knot bun filled with cheesy smashed patties and caramelized onions. Each bite of this burger is pure bliss. To make this recipe, you will need the key ingredients shared below.

Key Ingredients

  • Giant Garlic Knots – I used this Giant Garlic Knots recipe
  • 80/20 Ground Beef
  • American Cheese
  • White or Yellow Onion
  • Unsalted Butter
  • Worcestershire Sauce
  • Yellow Mustard
  • Salt
  • Black Pepper
  • Burger Sauce – I used this Homemade Burger Sauce recipe

Preparation

  • Caramelize Onions – in a large pan or skillet under medium heat, melt butter. Add in the onions and cook while stirring until the onions start to softened. Season with salt and Worcestershire sauce. Continue to cook while stirring until the onions are fully softened and take on a golden brown, caramelized color, about 6-8 minutes. Remove from heat.
  • Toast Garlic Knots – evenly slice garlic knots in half. In the same pan used to make the caramelized onions, melt butter under medium heat. Add the knots cuts side down to toast until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Cook Patties – divide the ground beef into into (4) 1/4 pound portions and shape into a ball. Flatten each portion of beef into thin patties between two pieces of parchment paper. In a skillet under medium high heat, drizzle in some oil. In batches, add the smashed patties into the pan. Season with salt and black pepper and spread 1 teaspoon of mustard over patties. Cook patties for 2-3 minutes, flip, season with salt and black pepper and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes or until preferred doneness. Add a slice of American cheese over each patty. Cover the skillet with a lid to allow the cheese to melt. Stack (2) patties on top of each other to form a double patty.
  • Assemble Burgers – on a clean surface,  place down the bottom half of a garlic knot, spread over some burger sauce (about 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons) and top with a double cheese patty. Spoon some caramelized onions over the patties, spread some burger sauce over the top half of the garlic knot and place over the onions. Repeat with remaining knot, patties and caramelized onions for a total of (2) burgers. Serve burgers immediately with fries and extra burger sauce or on its own.

  • 4 teaspoons yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • burger sauce
  • 2-3 teaspoon avocado or vegetable oil, for drizzling to cook patties

Instructions

  • In a large pan or skillet under medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add in the onions and cook while stirring until the onions start to softened. Season with salt and Worcestershire sauce. • In the skillet under medium high heat, drizzle in some oil.
  • In batches, add the smashed patties into the skillet. Season with salt and black pepper and spread 1 teaspoon of mustard over patties (optional). Cook patties for 2-3 minutes, flip, season with salt and black pepper and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes or until preferred doneness.

  • On a clean surface, place down the bottom half of a garlic knot, spread over some burger sauce (about 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons or more if desired) and top with a double cheese patty.
  • Spoon some caramelized onions over the patties, spread some burger sauce over the top half of the garlic knot (about 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons or more if desired) and place over the onions. Repeat with remaining knot, patties and caramelized onions for a total of (2) burgers.
