How to Make Crispy Long Mozzarella Sticks (Cheese Fries)
This recipe for Crispy Long Mozzarella Sticks (Cheese Fries) is such a fun treat that taste just as good as it looks! Consisting of long strips of mozzarella cheese that are coated in seasoned breadcrumbs and fried until crisp with a melty and gooey interior, these mozzarella cheese sticks are incredibly delicious and so easy to make. To make this recipe, you will need the key ingredients shared below.
Key Ingredients
- Low Moisture Mozzarella Cheese
- Plain Breadcrumbs (may use regular or panko)
- Eggs
- Flour
- Seasonings (Dried Parsley, Dried Oregano, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Paprika, Salt and Black Pepper)
- Avocado or Vegetable Oil

Preparation
- Prep Mozzarella Cheese – cut mozzarella cheese block into (5) vertical chunks and then cut chunk into roughly 1/4 inch thick strips for a total of (15).
- Setup Breading Station – assemble 3 shallow bowls or trays. In the first bowl, add and mix together the flour and seasonings. In the second bowl, add and whisk together the eggs and water. In the third bowl, add and mix together the breadcrumbs and seasonings.
- Coat Mozzarella Sticks – working with one mozzarella stick at a time, first coat in the flour mixture, then in the egg batter and lastly in the breadcrumbs. Repeat coating process but this time starting with the egg batter and ending with the breadcrumb mixture. Transfer to a parchment lined baking sheet and repeat coating process with the remaining mozzarella sticks.
- Chill Coated Mozzarella Sticks – transfer baking sheet with coated mozzarella into the freezer to chill for 1 hour.
- Fry Mozzarella Sticks – heat oil in a large pan or skillet to 325F. In batches, fry the mozzarella sticks until golden brown, about 3 to 5 minutes or longer as needed. Transfer to a wire cooling rack placed over a paper towel lined baking sheet to catch any excess oil drippings.
- Serve – mozzarella sticks immediately while still hot as is or with a side of your favorite sauce.

Ingredients
Mozzarella Sticks
- 2 pounds low moisture mozzarella cheese
- 2 to 3 cups avocado or vegetable oil, for frying
Flour Mixture
- 2/3 cup all purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Egg Batter
- 4 eggs
- 1/2 cup filtered water
Breadcrumb Mixture
- 3 cups plain breadcrumbs, may use regular or panko
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt, adjust to taste
- 2 teaspoons dried parsley
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika, optional
Instructions
- Use a sharp knife to cut mozzarella cheese into (5) vertical chunks and then cut chunk into roughly 1/4 inch thick strips for a total of (15) sticks.
- Assemble (3) shallow bowls. In the first bowl, add and mix together the flour and seasonings (salt, black pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder). In the second bowl, add and whisk together the eggs and water. In the third bowl, add and mix together the breadcrumbs and seasonings (salt, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, dried parsley, dried oregano and paprika).
- Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. Working with one mozzarella stick at a time, thoroughly coat in the flour mixture, then in the egg batter and lastly in the breadcrumbs. Repeat coating process but this time starting with the egg batter and ending with the breadcrumb mixture. Transfer to prepared baking sheet and repeat coating process with the remaining mozzarella sticks. (To minimize the cheese bursting out once fried, make sure that each mozzarella stick this thoroughly coated in breadcrumbs including the top and bottom. Do not skip the double coat step.)
- Transfer baking sheet with coated mozzarella sticks into the freezer to chill for 1 hour.
- Heat oil in a large pan or skillet to 325F. In batches, fry the mozzarella sticks until golden brown on all sides about 4 to 6 minutes or longer as needed. Transfer to a wire cooling rack placed over a paper towel lined baking sheet to catch any excess oil drippings.
- Serve mozzarella sticks immediately while still hot as is or with a side of your favorite sauce. Enjoy!
